Healthy at Home
By Melissa Busse

aaaaou are the queen of your own castle; it's time to think about transforming your kingdom into one that promotes healthy choices. If a gym, rubberized running track, scenic nature trail or participation in an organized sport isn't convenient to you in either time or cost – you can be active at home.
a

aaaaMoving your body doesn't need to be a burden. In fact, the official recommendation from synthesizing all the science out there is that we engage in "at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days of the week". Notice it's not to run a marathon or swim the English Channel. It's just to keep our bodies moving beyond normal duty for 30 minutes on every day we can. This is doable. YOU can do this.
aaaaThis edition of Bod Squad provides a few easy tips for accomplishing this all without leaving the four walls of your home or breaking the (piggy) bank.

  • Try doing something like crunches, jumping jacks, lunges, push ups or knee lifts during the commercial breaks of your favorite TV shows.
  • Play actively with your children and/or pets.
  • Climb stairs if you have them.
  • Invest in some Pilates bands for cheap and easy strength training at home.
  • Do bicep curls with cans of soup or veggies while watching TV or waiting for your chicken to come out of the oven.
  • Toddlers make for great strength training. Pick yours up and invent new games of flying.

aaaaGet creative. Be aware of what you have around you and how you can use it to help you stay toned and get your heart rate slightly up.
